Thanks Murilo thats a good question. I read recently in a journal study, that the risk of inheriting BPD on a genetic basis is around 40%, but I also know many studies argue 60–80% of people with BPD will have a history of trauma.
I think often its not so much what happens to us, but the meaning it has for us which decides whether an a event is traumatising or not. The predisposing sensitivity, is perhaps the biological basis of the disorder, while the life-stressors are what turns it into a mental illness. Either way, I found sustained recovery comes from deciding for yourself what your story is, and how the next chapter will come about.
